MG Hitters Storm Back and Rally as Pitching Holds Form After Rocky First

Box Score 5/11/2024

Maple Grove 9, Mahtomedi 6

The Zephyrs busted out for five runs in the top of the first inning on a hit-by-pitch, three singles, and a triple. However, that would be the only runs Mahtomedi scored until the seventh as Evan O'Dwyer settled in with scoreless innings in the second, third, and fourth, and Matthew Kuno (W, 3IP, 2H, R, 2K) came on in relief to finish the game.

Crimson bats busted out in the bottom of the fourth as Beckett Shimpa (2/4, 2R) broke the hitless inning streak at ten with a single through the middle. After Nathan Schmidt (0/2, BB, SF, RBI) was robbed by the center fielder on a line shot to deep center, Kaden Harney (2/3, 2R) singled on a towering shot to right, Brady Aubut (0/1, 2HBP, 2R) was hit by a pitch, and Kellen Riskedahl (2/3, R, 3RBI) singled in the first run for MG. Dylan Vokal (0/2, SF, RBI) drove in the second run with a sac fly to left and Gavin Kustermann (2/3, 4RBI) doubled in two more with a drive over the left fielder's head.

Down a run in the bottom of the fifth, the Crimson bats returned to form again. Brody Berglin (1/4, R) led off with a single through the left side, Shimpa followed with his second hit of the day, and Schmidt drove in the tying run on a sac fly to center. Harney continued the rally with a single to shallow center, Aubut followed with another hit-by-pitch, and Riskedahl gave Maple Grove the lead for good with a two-strike, two-run single. After a Vokal ground out advanced the runners, Kustermann doubled over the right fielder's head for the final two Crimson runs.

Mahtomedi scored a final run in the seventh on a lead-off triple and sac fly, but Kuno kept the Zephyrs from scoring another run and Maple Grove marched back to .500 on the season with a 9-6 victory over the Zephyrs.

Next week: at Coon Rapids, Tuesday | at Armstrong, Thursday | Senior Night vs. Osseo, Friday 5:30pm, Crimson Field***

UPDATE: TIME CHANGE FOR OSSEO

SENIOR NIGHT, FRIDAY, MAY 17TH, GAME TIME NOW SET FOR 5:30PM AT CRIMSON FIELD

Pettis, Blaine No-Hit Crimson

Box Score 5/9/2024

Blaine 3, Maple Grove 0

Beckett Shimpa (5IP, 5H, 1R, 2K) toed the rubber for Maple Grove and took the hard-luck loss as the opposing pitcher, Ethan Pettis, blanked the Crimson with a complete game no-hit shutout. The game was scoreless entering the fifth, when the Bengals plated a run with a walk, a single, and Pettis' own two-out RBI knock. The Crimson bats remained silent while Pettis carried a perfect game into the bottom of the sixth. Two one-out walks in the sixth gave Maple Grove a chance, but the final two batters of the inning could not plate a Crimson run. After the Bengals plated two more runs in the top of the seventh to make it a 3-0 game, the Crimson again put two runners on with a walk and a hit-by-pitch. But a line drive at the right fielder ended the opportunity and the game.

First home loss for MG. Next up: Mahtomedi Saturday 11am at Gleason

MG Plates an Even Dozen to Hold Back Rebels

Box Score 5/7/2024

Maple Grove 12, Champlin Park 4

The Crimson bats struck early for four runs in the bottom of the first; but the Rebels bounced back with three of their own in the top of the third inning. Brody Berglin (W, 5IP, 4H, 3R, 3K) commanded the mound for every other inning he pitched and got the win for Maple Grove, as MG produced big innings in the fifth (3 runs) and sixth (5 runs) to pull away from CP. Ian Schock (IP, ER, K) pitched the sixth and Kaden Harney (IP, H, 0R, 2K) finished things off on the hill for the home nine.

At the plate, Kellen Riskedahl (1/2, HR, 3RBI) produced the three early runs with a round-trip blast to left field, while Beckett Shimpa (3/4, 2x2B, 3R) led the hit-squad with three knocks, including two doubles. Nathan Schmidt (2/4, 2B, 2RBI, 2R) continued his torid spring, while Harney (2/3, 2RBI, R) and Dylan Vokal (2/3, RBI, R) added their own multiple-hit games. Gavin Kustermann's pinch hit suicide squeeze plated two runs in the sixth when the Rebel defense couldn't field the bunt properly, and Brady Aubut drove in the final 2 runs of the night with his own with a pinch hit double.
