Nathan Schmidt comes up huge in wet and wild walk-off
Box Score 4/29/2024
Maple Grove 10, Edina 9
The mist came and went. As did the Crimson runs. The MG nine were held scoreless in the first, third, and fifth, but provided a big five-run second, while also scoring two in the fourth, one in the sixth, and two victorious runs in the bottom of the seventh. On a night that was tough to pitch through the Maple Grove hurlers held their own, with Beckett Shimpa (3.2IP, 2H, 2ER, 5K) starting and leading the way. Brody Berglin eventually came in to pitch the final two innings to pick up the win.
At the plate, the story was senior Nathan Schmidt (4/5, HR, 6RBI, 2R) who made an out in his first at bat and then decided it wouldn't happen again. Shimpa (2/3, 2B, 2BB, R) was also solid at the plate, and eight of the nine starting bats got a hit.
The Hornets tied the game at seven with three runs in the top of the sixth, but the Crimson answered as Brady Aubut drove in a run with an RBI ground out in the bottom half of the inning. Leading 8-7 entering the ninth, Edina rallied again and scored two runs to take a 9-8 lead. But the MG squad would not be denied. Dylan Vokal led off the bottom of the ninth with a walk. Berglin and Shimpa followed with beautiful bunts for hits to load the bases. That brought up Schmidt, who had already homered in the fourth inning. After fouling off the first pitch of the AB, Schmidt deposited a soft line drive into right field to score Vokal and Berglin and walk off the Hornets.
