#5 Maple Grove Rallies in the Seventh to Beat #4 Champlin Park
Box Score 5/28/2024
Maple Grove 4, Champlin Park 3
A scoreless first inning foreshadowed the pitchers duel that would follow for most of the next five innings. Evan O'Dwyer (W, 6IP, 7H, 2ER, 4K) held the Rebels down for five innings while the Crimson plated a lone run in the second on a Kellen Riskedahl (1/3, RBI) single that scored Gavin Kustermann (1/3, R). But in the bottom of the sixth, Champlin Park broke through, scoring three runs on three hits and an error.
Down, 3-1, entering the top of the seventh, Maple Grove faced their last chance to stay in the winners bracket for section play. Brady Aubut (1/3, 2B, R) led off the inning with a seven-pitch at bat that ended with a double to left-center. After a strikeout, Brody Berglin (1/2, HBP, R) followed with a single to right that moved Aubut to third. Connor Wihlm (1/3, 2B, RBI) then struck with a double over the right fielder's head that made the score 3-2 with the tying run at third and the go-ahead run at second.
After taking a ball to start his at bat, Dylan Vokal (1/3, 2RBI) hit a sharp line drive up the middle to score both Berglin and courtesy-runner Vann Olson to give the Crimson their final lead. Matthew Kuno (SV, IP, 0H, OR, K) would come on to get the final three outs and advance Maple Grove to Thursday's quarterfinal matchup with Mounds View.
