O'dwyer Throws CG Gem to Win Game 1; Five-Run Fourth Dooms Crimson in Game 2
Box Score Gm 1 | Box Score Gm 2 6/5/2025
Maple Grove 5, Champlin Park 0
Junior Evan O'Dwyer (W, CG, 7IP, 2H, 0R, 0BB, 4K) was dealing in game one of Section 5AAAA championship game day, limiting the Rebels to an infield single early and a ground ball down the left field line for a double late in the game. The Maple Grove bats did all they needed to in the second inning, putting up five runs on a solo home run by junior Preston Berg (1/3, HR, 2R, RBI); singles from juniors Oliver Taynton (1/2, HBP), Kaden Harney (1/3, BB, R), and Joey Limric (1/3, BB, R), and sophomore Vince Lenmark (1/3, R); and doubles from senior Maddex Van Slooten (1/3, 2B, 2RBI), and sophomore Beckett Shimpa (3/4, 2x2B, 2RBI).
In game two, both teams started out fairly hot with the bats, each plating a run in the first. The Crimson then took a lead in the bottom of the third, scoring two runs on a Shimpa double (1/4, 2B, 2RBI). However, the Rebels would respond quickly in the top of the fourth, scoring the last five runs of the game on a variety of softly hit fly balls, Texas-leaguers, seeing-eye ground balls, and one lazy line drive through the middle. Senior Ian Schock (L 4IP, 7H, 5R, 1K) took the hard luck loss, with Shimpa (2IP, 0H, 0R, 3K) pitching the last two innings and holding the CP offense at bay. The Crimson hitters just couldn't provide the final necessary comeback.
Maple Grove ends the season 14-12, winning nine of the final eleven games, and finishing runner-up in Section 5AAAA.
