MG Hitters Storm Back and Rally as Pitching Holds Form After Rocky First
Box Score 5/11/2024
Maple Grove 9, Mahtomedi 6
The Zephyrs busted out for five runs in the top of the first inning on a hit-by-pitch, three singles, and a triple. However, that would be the only runs Mahtomedi scored until the seventh as Evan O'Dwyer settled in with scoreless innings in the second, third, and fourth, and Matthew Kuno (W, 3IP, 2H, R, 2K) came on in relief to finish the game.
Crimson bats busted out in the bottom of the fourth as Beckett Shimpa (2/4, 2R) broke the hitless inning streak at ten with a single through the middle. After Nathan Schmidt (0/2, BB, SF, RBI) was robbed by the center fielder on a line shot to deep center, Kaden Harney (2/3, 2R) singled on a towering shot to right, Brady Aubut (0/1, 2HBP, 2R) was hit by a pitch, and Kellen Riskedahl (2/3, R, 3RBI) singled in the first run for MG. Dylan Vokal (0/2, SF, RBI) drove in the second run with a sac fly to left and Gavin Kustermann (2/3, 4RBI) doubled in two more with a drive over the left fielder's head.
Down a run in the bottom of the fifth, the Crimson bats returned to form again. Brody Berglin (1/4, R) led off with a single through the left side, Shimpa followed with his second hit of the day, and Schmidt drove in the tying run on a sac fly to center. Harney continued the rally with a single to shallow center, Aubut followed with another hit-by-pitch, and Riskedahl gave Maple Grove the lead for good with a two-strike, two-run single. After a Vokal ground out advanced the runners, Kustermann doubled over the right fielder's head for the final two Crimson runs.
Mahtomedi scored a final run in the seventh on a lead-off triple and sac fly, but Kuno kept the Zephyrs from scoring another run and Maple Grove marched back to .500 on the season with a 9-6 victory over the Zephyrs.
